Circle Oak has an active intern and extern program with undergraduate and veterinary schools worldwide. To date we have welcomed participants from schools such as Santa Rosa Junior College, UC Davis (both undergraduate and veterinary), Cal Poly, Stanford and Colorado State. We've even had externs from veterinary schools in France and Italy.
The intern experience at Circle Oak is a fun and rewarding combination of observation of sophisticated medical techniques and hands-on involvement in daily care of rehabilitation and conditioning patients. Interns attend staff meetings, demonstrations and are encouraged to observe veterinary procedures whenever possible. Externs coming for more limited stays are able to focus on their dissertation or research subjects. All students work under the supervision of Nicole Numainville,RVT and Kari Farley,RVT. We require, for safety reasons, that all interns have excellent horse-handling skills and in virtually all cases require an in-person interview to assess skill level.
Internships are generally 16 hours/week during the school year, full-time in the summer term and externships are custom-crafted to fit the needs of the student and Circle Oak's schedule. All internships are unpaid and we do not offer housing. All students are covered by our workers' compensation insurance. Our interns have gone on to veterinary programs at UC Davis, undergraduate degrees at Colorado State and permanent positions here at Circle Oak.
If you are an equine science student, a student working towards a veterinary technician credential or a pre-veterinary student in search of an externship, consider making Circle Oak part of your education.
